The torture wheel, also known as the breaking wheel or Catherine’s Wheel, was a brutal method of execution used primarily in Europe from antiquity through the Middle Ages up to the 19th century. This device was designed to inflict maximum pain and suffering, often in front of large crowds. The condemned person was tied to a large wooden wheel. The executioner would then use a heavy object to systematically break the person’s bones, starting from the legs and working upwards. After the bones were broken, the body was often woven into the spokes of the wheel and displayed on a pole as a warning to others1.
